Disneyland Weather Tips

Disneyland Attendance Tips

Did you ever see a movie called “L.A. Story”? Steve Martin plays a weatherman in Los Angeles who is bored with his job because the weather report is simply “Sunny” day after day after day.

That does sum up LA weather. In general, Disneyland temperatures fall between 70 – 86 degrees during the day for most of the year (45 – 63 at night). There is some variation however, from extreme heat (over 100) to rainy and relative cold (40’s).

Disneyland Temperature Trends

Some things to point out about Disneyland Weather:

  • The warmest month is August.
  • The coldest month is January.
  • The rainiest month is February.
  • The highest recorded temperature was 108°F in 2004.
  • The lowest recorded temperature was 30°F in 1990.

Best Times to Go to Disneyland

  1. Early September is the best time to visit Disneyland, when the weather is warm and crowds are light.  In late September they’ll start decorating for Halloween.
  2. Early May is the second best time to visit Disneyland.  The temperature range is 56 to 75°F and crowds are light.  Toward the end of the month though, things start heating up, both weather-wise and attendance-wise.  Watch for graduation parties on weekends.
  3. Early November before the Thanksgiving traffic rolls in is third.  It’s often still shorts and t-shirt weather and crowds are very light.  Nights can be chilly though (low 50’s).  They’ll start decorating for Christmas in the middle of the month.

Weather vs. Attendance

The chart below shows the estimated monthly attendance alongside average daytime temperatures. You can see that the weather all year is pretty nice but it’s best if you can hit the 75-80 range. Colder and you’ll be chilly after the wet rides, and warmer will feel downright hot out on that pavement.

To me, this chart says that if you go in May or September you’ll have the best chance of light crowds and nice weather.

Rain in Disneyland: What Happens?

Usually not much; stuff keeps being happy.  Sometimes outdoor shows and parades may be cancelled though.  Most rides stay open in the rain but the following rides have been known to close:

  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Davy Crockett’s Canoes
  • Gadget’s Go Coaster
  • The Mad Tea Party
  • Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
  • Storybook Land Canal Boats

You can go to City Hall on Main Street, U.S.A. and ask them for a list of what’s closed.

In California Adventure, these rides may close:

  • The Golden Zephyr
  • Goofy’s Sky School
  • Jumpin’ Jellyfish
  • Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters
  • Redwood Creek Challenge Trail
  • Tuck & Roll’s Drive ‘Em Buggies

When it comes to lightning, Disneyland doesn’t fool around; all outdoor attractions will close.
