I agree. It is totally cool to hop on the railroad when you first get in the gate. However, I would suggest that you go get a Fast Pass even before that train ride. If you're visiting on a busy day it is worth it to grab an early fast pass for Indiana Jones or Splash Mountain, rides that have long lines. You could save your group an entire hour, or more, just by getting a Fast Pass early. But again, this tip is for really busy days. If it's not that busy, ride that train first thing. It will give you a feel for the layout of Disneyland and give you an appreciation for the history of the happiest place on Earth.
